Craft Your Health Elixir: Milo's Tasty Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

My favorite way to bring in this new season (a little late I know haha) is simmering a pot of this tasty elderberry syrup. It fills the house with sweet and claryfing

Meet Milo's Tasty Elderberry Syrup—a delightful blend of nature's goodness packed in a bottle. Not only is this syrup a potent ally against seasonal ailments, but its soothing flavors also make it a heartwarming addition to your autumn pantry.

Here’s how you can whip up this healthful potion right in your kitchen:

Ingredients

- 4 ounces of dried elderberries

- 4 cups of distilled water

- 6 1” sticks of cinnamon

- 1-2 tablespoons of dried ginger root

For the Syrup

- 1 cup apple cider vinegar (with or without the mother, as per your preference)

- 32 ounces raw honey (local preferred)

Instructions

1. Mix It Up: In a large pot, combine the elderberries, distilled water, cinnamon sticks, and dried ginger pieces. This concoction is the foundation of your syrup, with each ingredient bringing a unique benefit to the table.

2. Let It Brew: Turn up the heat until you just start seeing a few bubbles. Once bubbling a bit, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer. Stir occasionally, allowing the berries to rehydrate and burst—releasing their healthful essence into the brew.

3. Steep and Cool: After a good simmer, turn off the heat and let your mixture sit for about 20-30 minutes. This steeping time allows the flavors to meld and the mixture to cool down just a bit.

4. Strain It Out: Once cooled, strain the mixture to separate the liquid from the solids. You now have the base for your elderberry syrup!

5. Sweeten and Tang: Now pour the apple cider vinegar and raw honey into the elderberry liquid. The apple cider vinegar adds a tangy zest while the honey provides a natural sweetness and it's own seasonal benefits.

6. Blend Well: Stir the apple cider vinegar and honey into the mixture to ensure all the ingredients unite into one tasty blend.

7. Bottle Your Brew: Allow the mixture to cool down before transferring it to bottles or jars. Label each with the date it was made.

8. Preserve and Enjoy: Store your bottles of Milo's Tasty Elderberry Syrup in the refrigerator, where they’ll keep for up to 3 months. Drizzle it over pancakes, stir it into a warm beverage, or enjoy a spoonful daily!

And there you have it—a simple, yet potent elderberry syrup recipe straight from Milo's kitchen to yours. As the saying goes, "A spoonful of elderberry syrup a day keeps the doctor away." So, here's to healthful days ahead!
